Ter Engelen @Lokeren
In Lokeren, less than 4 km from our office, one of our construction sites is in full swing: the extension of the residential care centre 'Ter Engelen'. The new building is planned on a plot next to the existing centre.

The new and the existing building will be connected by a skybridge. The bridge, which will be made of glass, will not only be an eye-catcher in its surroundings during the day, but will also catch the eye at night thanks to the architectural night lighting.

Taking into account the existing level differences of the existing centre on the one hand and the existing condition of the ground level on the other, the concept is arranged as follows:

The semi-underground basement comprises the technical rooms and individual storage rooms for the purpose of the assisted living flats, all with secure accesses.

The ground floor accommodates 10 flats, each with an entrance hall, lounge and dining area, open kitchen, sanitary area with walk-in shower, bedroom, storage room and spacious indoor terraces.
The corridor space between the different flats is deliberately designed as an open space with various areas for talking, playing cards and reading. A playful and pleasant location where residents can socialise.

The first floor is a small living area for 16 residents. There are 2 spacious living rooms provided and a nice terrace. The service rooms are located in a central middle block. The residence will be homely to create a warm sense of home.
The various sitting and meeting areas are closely intertwined with the 'open space' of the floor, without creating dead-end movement space for the residents.

The utility areas connect with the rooms (clusters), thus optimising ease of use for care staff, visual aspect and safety.

The infrastructure facilities are designed in accordance with current legislation and house an enclosed (waste) container and empties area, a spacious bicycle shed and the necessary roads and parking spaces. The focus here is on optimising accessibility and ease of use.

ABETEC is responsible for the architectural design, stability, techniques, infrastructure, EPB and safety coordination.
